KJs need to know

As a KJ your in charge of the gig.
You need to know a few rules of the game.

Some of the rules

- Always remember that you are just a paid worker, don't forget it.

- Never drink more than one maybe two drinks, drink soda it's better.

- Know the songs that your customers are going to sing and change the
key down or up accordingly. Don't let them start singing and then
start changing the key. When I'm doing a gig and someone asks
for a song that I know should be down one key, I change it before
they ever get started even if they don't ask for the change because I
know the song should be down one. They can sing the song
easily and enjoy the opportunity with out feeling bad about standing
there and singing the song badly.

- Make sure you use reverb on your microphones. Some KJs don't
and the singers don't sound good. If the singer wants less reverb
  that's ok.

- Never leave your area when you set up a singer.
Every song is different and you will need to re-adjust for bass and
treble differences between songs.  Plus every singer is different and
adjustments will have to made for them.

- Don't play your system too loud, it's offensive to the listener.
Watch your treble because it's the most offensive to people.
High frequencies tend to hurt your ears.  People that use ear pieces
have the opposite problem, their problem is bass.

- Be very careful about customers that want to tie up the gig.
They are the folks that bring 10 slips up to you at the beginning of the
gig.  They usually have songs that are very long playing and can
make your gig go bad fast. Usual songs are; Lynn eyes (Eagles),
Piano Man (Billy Joel), American Pie (Don McLean) and
American Trilogy (Elvis) are just a few songs that are too long.
Basic rule of thumb is if the song last more than 4 minutes don't play
  its bad for business.

- If you have a big crowd and your at the end of your contracted time
don't leave. If you give in and stay an extra half hour the people will
remember that. Good will goes a long way.

- Karaoke is most successful when you get people involved in the good
time. One thing that I do to achieve this is; I put wireless mics out on
tables and then play all the old songs that everyone knows.
Before you know everyone is sing a long and having a great time.
I've been able to convert people that hated karaoke in singers.

- Don't put your competition down no matter what is said try to defend
them. The business is tough enough without people sabotaging you.
